The image-generation race looks like a model-quality race. For enterprise it is not, it is a legal exposure race, and Adobe is the only player who built for that.

    Adobe's structural stack:
    • L1: Adobe Stock, fully licensed, rights-cleared training data.
    • L3: Customer indemnification against IP claims. Adobe pays if you get sued.
    • L4: Creative Cloud, embedded in Photoshop, Illustrator, Express, where designers already work.
    • L2: A model that is good enough, not best-in-class.

Why "good enough" wins here. A Fortune 500 marketing team cannot ship a campaign generated by a model trained on scraped art. Legal kills it. Firefly clears legal. Midjourney does not.

Law II, regulation is a layer, not an afterthought. The IP liability is a real layer of the supply chain. Whoever owns it owns the enterprise.

The pattern beyond Adobe. Getty Images is running the same play in stock. Shutterstock licensed its corpus to OpenAI. The "clean data" subset of L1 is becoming its own scarce asset.

    Public reporting.

    What This Means for You

    Product Leader

Map your product to the layers it actually owns vs. rents. The rented ones are where the counter-move work belongs.

    Investor

Underwrite layer ownership, not feature count. The Cube footprint is the moat.

    Operator

Audit your stack against Supply Chain of Intelligence. Anything sitting only at L7 is the layer to watch.
