Devin's launch was the most viral AI demo of 2024. The structural question Cognition has to answer in 2026: what do you own that Anthropic, OpenAI, and Cursor don't?

    The stack position:
    • L2: Rented from frontier labs. Same model anyone else can call.
    • L7: A polished autonomous agent UI. Replicable.
    • Missing L1: no proprietary code corpus. (GitHub belongs to Microsoft.)
    • Missing L4: no IDE distribution. (Cursor and VS Code own it.)
    • Missing L8: no per-developer memory loop that compounds.

The asymmetric threat, Cursor. Cursor sits at L4 (the IDE, where the developer already lives) and L6 (agent orchestration inside that IDE). When the agent lives where the work happens, the standalone-agent surface becomes a feature, not a product.

Law III again. A pure agent surface with no underlying layer is the new "GPT wrapper" pattern, polished surface on rented L2 with no defensible layer underneath.

What would save Devin. Acquire or build L1 (a proprietary corpus of fixed bugs, refactor patterns), or get acquired by an L4 owner. Standalone, the math is hard.

    Illustrative, not investment advice.

    What This Means for You

    Product Leader

Map your product to the layers it actually owns vs. rents. The rented ones are where the counter-move work belongs.

    Investor

Underwrite layer ownership, not feature count. The Cube footprint is the moat.

    Operator

Audit your stack against Supply Chain of Intelligence. Anything sitting only at L7 is the layer to watch.
