BloombergGPT is the cleanest example of vertical L1+L2 integration in the market.

    The structural play:
    • L1: 40 years of curated financial data, filings, news, pricing, transcripts. Proprietary, license-controlled.
    • L2: A 50B-parameter model trained on that corpus + general web. Smaller and cheaper than GPT-4, but tuned to finance.
    • L3: SEC-grade compliance, audit trails, source citation, table stakes for the buy-side.
    • L4: The Bloomberg Terminal, $24K/year, 350,000+ seats, the distribution monopoly no one can replicate.

Why generic models can't catch up. GPT-5 may be better at general reasoning. It cannot access Bloomberg's tick data, its analyst transcripts, or its terminal install base. The model layer is necessary but not sufficient. Bloomberg owns the other three layers a finance customer actually pays for.

The Cube projection: TALL (4 layers), NARROW (finance only), DEEP (every buy-side function). This is the tall, narrow, deep vertical stack.

The lesson: in regulated verticals, the model is the cheapest layer to own. The data, the rails, and the compliance are the moat.

    What This Means for You

    Product Leader

Map your product to the layers it actually owns vs. rents. The rented ones are where the counter-move work belongs.

    Investor

Underwrite layer ownership, not feature count. The Cube footprint is the moat.

    Operator

Audit your stack against Supply Chain of Intelligence. Anything sitting only at L7 is the layer to watch.
